Curriculum

At Beormund the teachers are given freedom and flexibility to allow creativity when studying the foundation subjects. Planning is driven by the Science curriculum, ensuring coverage of key skills and driving a broad range of objectives.

After deciding on the foci teachers are able to draw from a wealth of resources from the school’s Creative Curriculum and/or refer to the IPC documents, objectives and resources available.

Topics are created during staff meetings from all members of the class groups. Teaching and Learning Assistants/Learning Mentors then look to create resources and display materials to promote the topic. Teachers work closely with the admin team to book inspiring Enrichment activities to compliment the learning in class and a hook is devised to capture the imagination of the children when launching the topic.

The current topics this term (Spring 2016) are:

The Mayans studied by Thoughfulness (Yr5) and Respect (Yr6)

Robots studied by Resilience (Yr6), Honesty (Yr4) and The Helpers (Yrs2&3)

Below is Beormund's long term plan for coverage of the Primary Science Programme of Study, 2014

As a school we can choose to place the units of study in any term with the relevant Key Stage. Please also note that there will be elements of some Programmes of Study that will need to be studied not just in one term, but in several terms throughout the year. For example, learning about seasonal changes will need to take place in different terms. Flexibility, adaptability and personalisation of planning is encouraged at Beormund to suit the needs of the children in any class/year group.
