Beormund Primary is a successful SEMH (social, emotional and mental health) school situated in the shadow of the Shard serving predominantly Southwark children. Children arrive having been often excluded from more than one mainstream setting. All have EHC plans highlighting their internal and external barriers to learning. Our training programmes are based on our knowledge, experience, expertise and the strategies that works with some of London's most vulnerable and challenging children.

Challenging Behaviours

Whilst supporting vulnerable children excluded from many London mainstream settings, we do not have all the answers around behaviour, (we're not sure anyone does?) but we have a wealth of experience, expertise and purposeful strategies in which to shape guidance and training that would be suited to the needs of your school.

Challenging Behaviours

After an initial visit to your school we will begin to design a personalised training session related to the needs of your staff and setting. Our Challenging Behaviour course encompasses table top activities to evoke conversations around behaviours that challenge. We aim to guide staff to look beyond those behaviours and ultimately identify the purpose it is intending to serve.

We support Senior Leaders in addressing the needs of individuals, teams or specific staff groups in relation to their general or specific practice. We also support the process of Policy Writing and working with other stakeholders such as parent/carer workshops and presenting to Governors. Inset days, training sessions, observations and feedback packages can be devised to suit your budget.

iRead, iWrite, iStories

This project looks to develop a child's emotional literacy - a key life skill in an ever changing and constantly challenging world. As facilitators you will model and encourage children to be able to identify, analyse and verbalise their feelings, acknowledging themselves as capable writers too.

iRead, iWrite, iStories

iRead, iWrite, iStories can be delivered as a small class teaching strategy or as a nurturing intervention. It's drive is to empower children to see themselves as writers allowing them space, time and creativity to explore within the metaphor. As adults it provides an invaluable insight into the children's lives and allows us a better understanding of their thoughts, feelings, anxieties and often, the way they see the world. 

The therapeutic storywriting project encompasses mindfulness, identifying emotions and the ability to verbalise how you think and feel. It evokes purposeful conversations about feelings and incorporates aspects of art/design and role play.

With no marking (yes no marking!) children will take ownership and pride over their stories and through a collaborative editing process you will begin to see the development of their writing skills.

This has been a highly effective intervention at Beormund Primary for many years. Working with some of the most vulnerable children with social, emotional and mental health needs we have been able to explore and develop their emotional literacy.

Our approaches differ for many children. Whilst supporting schools, we will explore Personalisation as a concept, possible internal and external factors that hinder a child's progress and look at ways to provide for your most vulnerable children.

Emotional Wellbeing & Personalisation

In an ever demanding education system where we are encouraged to group individuals in order to reduce workload we sometimes lose sight of the individual. Whilst supporting our most vulnerable of children, we at Beormund are constantly looking at ways to meet the needs of all children. With the use of our Personalised Learning Files we can begin to do just that. Equal ops no longer means treating everyone the same. In our training you will begin to explore the difference internal and external factors that may affect a child's ability to learn.

After our initial visit to your school we can then devise a Personalised training programme incorporating theory, research and practical activities to engage your staff and evoke reflective conversations that will shape future practice.

Peer Massage

Peer Massage is a successful, engaging initiative that encourages relaxation, reciprocal kindness, appropriate touch and is a highly effective strategy to calm and refocus the class team in preparation for learning

Children partake in a series of massage techniques and over time, children in our SEMH school have demonstrated that the benefits of Peer Massage include:

  • Calmness after breaktimes
  • Less aggression and anger displayed
  • Reduced anxiety
  • Stronger relationships developed
  • Fractious relationships improved
  • Highlights positive and appropriate touch

The techniques must remain the same in principle but the amount covered in a session can be personalised according to the capabilities and/or needs of both children participating. There is a plethora of research to suggest the positive benefits of massage and nurturing touch for children. Our Massage courses incorporate the skills and knowledge necessary to facilitate such a programme in your setting.

Team Teach

Bespoke de-escalation and positive training. Our behaviour management courses have an emphasis on promoting and protecting positive relationships, listening and learning, recovery and repair.

Team Teach

Through positive behaviour approaches and plans, with a focus on de-escalation, to actively reduce risk and the need for restraint; to support teaching, learning and caring, by increasing staff confidence and competence, in responding to behaviours that challenge, whilst promoting and protecting positive relationships. These are the Team Teach aims.

Restorative Approaches to Behaviour

An informative and useful toolkit in dealing with difficult situations between people and identifying resolutions to enable parties to move forwards by looking at how people work together, the hierarchy in situations, body language, the third person and the process of restorative meetings.

Restorative Approaches to Behaviour

The strategy can be used for all stakeholders in a school community including children, staff and parents.

A full day training course that explores restorative approaches and its use within school settings.  As part of the course we look at the processes and systems for effective practice and how successful restoration can have a positive impact on educations environments and wider school communities. 

The day will be made up of the following:

    • Looking at relationships in situations and ensuring equal perspectives
  • Transactional analysis – different States
    • Exploring how people feel in different states
  • Crisis Vs Conflict
    • Developing an understanding of where restorative is required

  • Restorative skills – Juggler 1 and 2
    • The process of exploring situations and using active listening

Increasingly, and thankfully, more professionals are beginning to realise the importance of educating the whole child. At Beormund Primary school we not only look at the academic achievements of our children but their emotional well being, mental health and resilience too. Providing for children with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH) it's imperative that we do. We have first-hand experiences of offering a blended approach to education encompassing many therapeutic and personalised elements to education and have observed and measured improvements in children’s well being. BeyondBeormund is the training and development aspect of our school.
